The Science of Shine: PVD vs. Electroplating

When I started Seaform Studio, my number one goal was to create pieces that actually last. I wanted jewellery that could keep up with a coastal lifestyle without losing its luster after a few wears.

The "Secret" from the Renovation World

Before Seaform, I worked as a bathroom renovation consultant. It was there that I first saw the power of PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coating. In the renovation world, PVD is used on premium tapware because it is virtually indestructible.

While traditional gold plating, like electroplating, sits loosely on the surface, PVD is blasted deep into the metal's "skin" at a molecular level. It doesn't just sit on top; it becomes part of the metal.

Think of it like comparing a sticker to a tattoo. Because of this process, the finish can’t peel, flake, or wear off like standard plating often does.

The 12-Hour Saltwater Test

Living by the ocean, I knew I had to put this to the test. I ran a 12-hour saltwater experiment comparing a standard electroplated gold jump ring against one of my PVD gold jump rings. The results speak for themselves:

  • Left (Electroplated Gold): After just 12 hours, the gold has almost completely faded, revealing the stainless steel base underneath.

  • Right (PVD Gold): Still shining as bright as the moment it went in!

Quality You Can Trust

I am still working closely with my suppliers to ensure every finding used at Seaform Studio meets these high standards. Whether it’s 316L stainless steel or 14k gold-filled wire, I want you to feel confident in every piece you wear.

I want to hear from you! If you ever have a question or an issue with a piece, please reach out. Whether it’s positive or negative, your feedback helps me build a brand you can truly trust.

Happy hunting,

The Emu
