The Emu's Field Guide: Is Your "Sea Glass" Truly Tumbled by the Tide?

Every piece of genuine sea glass tells a story whispered by the Pacific. It's a tale of forgotten bottles, broken windows, and decades spent tumbling in the surf. But not everything you find on the beach, or see sold as "sea glass," has lived that salty life. As The Emu, who's spent countless hours combing the Forster-Tuncurry shoreline, I've developed a keen eye for what I call a "cooked" piece, a treasure truly made by the ocean.
The "Cooked" Difference: Why Frosting Matters
The hallmark of authentic, ocean-tumbled sea glass is its soft, frosted appearance. This isn't just pretty; it's a scientific marvel! When glass tumbles in saltwater over 20-100+ years, the abrasive sand and constant motion slowly etch its surface. The salt then leaches out the lime and soda content, creating tiny, microscopic pits and a beautifully frosted, opaque surface.
Genuine "Cooked" Glass: Feels smooth yet slightly textured, like a river stone. It won't reflect light sharply but rather diffuse it with a soft glow. You might even see small "C-shaped" lines or pitting from years of wave action.
Beware the "Fakes" (or Just "Beach Glass")
Not all glass found on the beach is true sea glass. Sometimes, people throw glass directly onto the sand, and it hasn't had the decades required to "cook." Worse, there’s a lot of mass-produced "craft glass" out there, sold as sea glass, which is simply machine-tumbled in an acid bath or rock polisher.
The "Shiny" Give-Away: If a piece of "sea glass" looks shiny, clear, or has sharp, unbroken edges, it's likely a fake or merely "beach glass" that hasn't been ocean-tumbled enough. It might feel smooth, but it won't have that distinctive frosted texture.
Colour Uniformity: Fakes often come in unnaturally vibrant, uniform colours not typically found in genuine, aged sea glass.
Why Authenticity is Our Anchor at Seaform Studio
When you wear a piece from Seaform Studio, whether it's from our Shoreline, Mid-Tide, or Deep Sea collections, you’re wearing a true piece of the Pacific. Every shard has been personally hand-foraged by me, The Emu, from the beaches around Forster-Tuncurry. We never use craft glass or un-tumbled fragments. Our commitment is to the authentic story, the genuine journey, and the
enduring beauty that only decades in the ocean can create. It's why your piece is truly one-of-a-kind, holding the whispers of the tide within its frosted surface.
Next time you’re on the beach, or considering a sea glass purchase, run your thumb over that surface. Is it shiny, or does it feel like a whisper of the ocean? Trust your instincts, and look for that beautiful, frosted "cooked" texture. That’s the real treasure.
Machine Tumbled Wave Tumbled
Happy hunting,
The Emu
